Welcome to Mrs. Buckley’s Texas History class. I am pleased to have you in my class and to be able to share Texas history with you. I hope you come to enjoy and appreciate the exciting and unique history that Texas has. We will use social studies terms and skills to study various eras in Texas History. We will quickly move through the natural regions in Texas and its people. From there, we will move on to Texas’s diverse history. By the end of the first semester, we will have covered American Indians, Freedom Week and Texas government, the Spanish colonization, the beginnings of Mexican as a nation, the settlement of Texas, the Texas Revolution, and finally, Texas as a Republic and then as a state. Students will also be learning research skills and will be doing research projects during the first semester, as well as the history fair competition. All students will participate in a history research project that will be due the second week in December. At the beginning of the second semester, we will study Texas during the Civil War and Reconstruction. We will also learn about Texas’s economic history through cotton and the cattle industry, and its industrialization through railroads and the oil industry. The final nine weeks will be spent learning about Texas during the 20th and 21st century. We will discuss such topics as the Great Depression, World War II, the Civil Rights, conservatism, and current events. As you can see, it will be a very busy year for our students.
Since I do not have a telephone in my classroom, it is often easier to contact me by email. If you do wish to call, it will go to the receptionist and she will let me know. I will return the call as soon as I can. My conference period is from 2:25 until 3:10.
